White Cube

A live art intervention by visual artists Rudi Laing and Angelique Coralie Kendall;

'White Cube' is a  play on the  term designated in the art-world, to signify a gallery space. The artists adorned in white, holding perfect white cubes, and ritualistically smeared in white clay, proceed to trace a path through the city space, stopping intermittently to inscribe the image of a white cube upon the ground, with the white cube itself, thereby wearing it away at the edges.

We were effectively transmuting an area of the city and all of its activity into living artworks within a 'gallery', as such rendering life into art. By interrupting the daily routine of the city space, we highlight that routine, setting that moment apart from all the others, sacralising the mundane... daily life, the rushing home of commuters, the bustling of shopkeepers, the striding of distinguished businessmen, the streets, the traffic, the high-rise buildings; all become living, walking, breathing, thinking, existing, transient artworks.

We the artists, adorned in white to signify a state of purity and un-manifested potentiality, are blank like the gallery walls, like the blank canvass, the blank page, we are nullified and erased and yet primed awaiting expression. We are visible to everyday life, and yet represent a metaphysical realm that transcends manifest existence. We are liminal, working with transcendental forces, shifting the perceptions and boundaries with invisible aether.
