Mnemosyne

Memories are both transient fleeting perceptions contained within tangible sites of external places, and creative, internal forces, sculpting a formative axis around which sites develop and engage with the world. An interesting nexus occurs at the conjunctions of material and immaterial memory sites, both within the external urban environment and the internal subjective landscape; a nexus which is heightened and highlighted through the motion and repetition of daily comings and goings and the larger cyclical nature of exile and return.

Invoking the lateral tension between two cities on opposite ends of the world, with the tension within the individual to introspect and express, ascend and ground, I projected a video artwork created from a montage of clips taken in Vancouver and Cape Town upon an installation and my body, and moved to the instinctual pulse of the fleeting moment in time.

In conveying the transience of memory and place, and the haphazard fragmentation that exists both materially and disembodied at the specific nexus point where the past and present meet and collide, I create a ritualistic rite of passage where the past may be severed from the present, through an honorary celebration of memories.
